CURRENT CHARACTERS: Dr. Carson Beckett, Clint Barton
CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Professor David Webb AKA Jason Bourne
SERIES: Robert Ludlum's Bourne series
CANON POINT: Between the end of Supremacy and the beginning of Ultimatum.
LOSS: The ability to change his basic appearance unassisted. David, as Bourne, is also known as "the Chameleon", and is able to make subtle to drastic changes to his basic appearance to blend in. This loss prevents him from doing that.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Professor David Webb is not all he seems to be. Normally, a mild-mannered, athletic Oriental Studies professor at a Maine University, David's past holds many secrets. Not all of them he remembers fully.
During the Vietnam War, David was a young Foreign Services officer, married to a Vietnamese woman, with whom he had two children. One day, an air attack on the river where his wife and children were bathing resulted in their deaths. The identity of the pilot, whether friend or foe, was never established. David, driven by anguish, signed up for a clandestine operation known as "Medusa," where he was known as "Delta One." He swiftly became their most ruthless, reckless and unpredictable operative.
After his time in Medusa, David joined the CIA operation known as "Treadstone 71." Treadstone's existance was to track down, gain intel, and terminate the European assassin known as Carlos the Jackal. He took the identity of Jason Bourne, the name of a Medusan Operative David killed, and, under the name of "Cain," began taking credit for several high-profile deaths, building a reputation to rival Carlos' to draw him out.
Delta is for Charlie, Charlie is for Cain, Cain is for Carlos.
David got close to Carlos, close enough to make an attempt on his life, however the attempt failed, and David was shot, left to die in the Mediterranean Sea. He was rescued, however, and taken to a doctor in a French town called Ile de Port Noir. He's close to death, and, after recovering enough to regain conciousness, it's revealed he has amnesia.
After finding a microfilm of a bank account in Zurich, he starts to peice together his past slowly. He finds that his name, at least on the account, is Jason Bourne. Shortly after that, he kidnaps a Canadian Economist called Marie St. Jacques to use as an escape route from a firefight in the hotel. She manages to escape, but is caught by Carlos' men, and nearly executed, if it weren't for Jason returning.
Marie falls in love with Jason, and Jason does with Marie. The two manage to escape Zurich, heading to Paris, where Jason's memory slowly returns, along with the knowledge of the Jackal. Hounded by both Carlos and the CIA, who believe that Bourne has turned into the assassin they credited him as, both Jason and Marie escape France, and everything is cleared up. Jason remembers his real name, and Marie and David start their new life.
A few years later shows a happily married David and Marie, living in Maine, where David teaches Oriental Studies at a local University. Here, it is revealed that David still suffers from his amnesia, struggling with the memories of his life as Delta and as Jason Bourne. He considers Delta and Bourne to be one and the same, often treating them as seperate to himself, a different personality.
When Marie is kidnapped, David has to travel to Hong Kong to free her by killing a wealthy businessman in China, and to help find an imposter, using the name "Jason Bourne," one feared in Asia because of the credited kills when Bourne was part of Treadstone 71. He assumes the persona of Delta/Bourne once again.
From this, David has a clear case of multiple personality disorder. The calm, intelligent, book-ish David Webb, and the cold-hearted Delta, the assassin Jason Bourne. The man willing to do anything to complete his goal. The two personalities often clash, especially when his feelings for Marie are present. Both sides love her, for the same reason, but Bourne is willing to do anything it takes to protect her, shoving aside his other personality.
David, whilst slightly unstable mentally, is usually calm and collected. He suffers greatly from the memories surfacing from his amnesia, and reacts badly when those he loves and considers friends are threatened. He is extremely intelligent, can speak several languages fluently, and is generally calm and pleasant. He loves his family dearly, and will, and is able to, protect them. He is reluctant, however, to relive his past, and will do anything necessary to avoid re-awakening Jason Bourne, who lies dormant in his mind. The right trigger, however, can bring the assassin back.
Jason, however, is colder than the other side of his personality. A calculating killer, Jason Bourne plays on the skills he learned as a Medusa operative. He's a skilled tracker, proficient in many types of mundane weaponry and an expert in extorting information. He can bluff his way through most situations with minimal information, whilst extracting more information, and can easily think on his feet and adapt nearly instantly.
In summary, David Webb is a very intelligent, very dangerous man. He is not someone you want to get on the bad side of, but someone you would want on your side. Despite his mental problems, he's dependable, but may need some persuading.
ABILITIES: [ If applicable, provide a summary of your character's supernatural, magical or technological abilities, or anything that might make them otherwise exceptional compared to your average human being. Links are welcome if the character has too many abilities to expand on here.]
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: It's weird the thoughts that come to you when changing diapers.
David Webb is blinking the sleep from his eyes, having been woken by the baby monitor translating the harsh cries of young Jamie. It was his turn to be on diaper and feeding duty, so he was blindly going through the motions, his mind wandering. He thinks of the mundane stuff, the papers he needs to grade, the lecture on the Quing Dynasty he's set to deliver in two days...
...And then his mind wanders further afield, leaving the safe pastures of married life, fatherhood and job-related thoughts, straying into the dark forests belonging to assassins, death, and subterfuge. He thinks about the Jackal, about how he's still out there, somewhere, fuming that he is still overshadowed by Cain. By Jason Bourne. By him.
It's while he's cradling Jamie over his shoulder, burping him after feeding, that David shakes his thoughts free from the dark recesses of his mind. No! We're safe. We're as safe as we can be. But there was always this other voice in the back of his head. The voice that makes the hairs on the back of David's neck stand up. Don't let your guard down. You do, you die. Delta is for Charlie, Charlie is for Cain, Cain is for Carlos. Remember that.
There's not a day goes by where that voice doesn't mutter that line The voice of Jason Bourne. Asleep, but not gone, dormant. Ready.
David cradles his son until the baby is asleep again, gently laying him back down in his cot. He watches him for a moment, his expression blank, before turning and heading back out of the room, turning the light off as he goes.
